Description

Still with the Gloucester Warwickshire gala, here we have Bulleid 'West Country' pacifics Nos. 34007 'Wadebridge' and 34092 'Wells' entering Toddington with a train from Cheltenham in the summer of 2015. Double-headed pacifics were not that common on British Railways but did happen and there was certainly one train from the West of England that regularly featured a pair of Bulleids.

The unmodified pacifics with the 'air-smoothed' casing, as shown here, have long been referred to - irreverently but usually fondly - as Spam Cans. Note that the second engine, 'Wells' has the original unmodified style of tender with the high raves, whereas the pilot, 'Wadebridge' has the later, cut-down version.

As a volunteer at Ropley Locomotive Works (Mid-Hants Railway), I've worked on No. 34007 "Wadebridge" many times during her years of service, having joined the Watercress Line in March 2010. Shame that she's now out of service, awaiting her first major ovehaul since her restoration; luckily though, sister-engine No. 34105 "Swanage" will take her place, following the completion of her current overhaul. It's quite funny that, thanks to "Wadebridge" and "Swanage", plus their Battle of Britain sibling "Winston Churchill" (which came to the Watercress Line for a cosmetic overhaul), I am far more familiar to the 'Spam Cans' in their original (unrebuilt) form, as opposed to their modified (rebuilt) form. I am a great fan of the Bulleid Pacifics, though they aren't to everyone's taste amongst my colleagues at the Mid-Hants Railway. So, I refer to them as the Marmite Engines. :)
