The last Dreadnought

Description

From my recent trip to the United States in September 2015, at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. This is the port side of the battleship USS Texas  (BB35) which is the clear side not obstructed by the monopile mooring system and the access bridge over to the starboard quarter. Sadly, the sun was on the other side!

USS Texas, which fought at Normandy, Iwo Jima and Okinawa to name but three famous engagements, is the sole surviving dreadnought battleship. Commissioned in 1914, she served in both World Wars. Other battleships are preserved of course, but, aside from the Japanese 'pre-dreadnought' 'Mikasa', the others are of much later design. There is also the USS Arizona whose remains are preserved as a memorial and I believe a war grave at Pearl Harbor.
