The end of an icon

Description

The word icon is perhaps bandied about a little too freely these days but when it comes to the Westland Sea King I feel that the term is justified as it has been seen in our skies for many years and saved a lot of lives. The final RAF Sea King operational sortie in the UK was from Chivenor in Devon on October 4, 2015, so I am a little late in marking the occasion. This is also a bit of a cheat in that my picture was taken a few years earlier, in August 2011 on the occasion of RAF Harrowbeer's 70th Anniversary. This is Sea King HAR3A ZH545 of 22 Squadron, based at Chivenor, and it was this squadron which undertook the final sortie.

Upon the standing down of the RAF and RN Search and Rescue units, the SAR function was taken over by Bristow Helicopters Limited.

The final Royal Navy SAR unit (771 Squadron) stood down on New Year's Day 2016 and the final Commando Helicopter Force 'Junglie' flights took place in March 2016 as the Sea King era draws to a close.

I have not taken many photographs of aircraft over the years - perhaps I can redress the balance in time to come.
