Description

The former commando carrier HMS Bulwark awaiting the final call to the scrapyard in April 1983 - in company with the cruiser HMS Tiger (see my picture 'Dying Tiger'). For years, Bulwark had been known as the 'Rusty B' but here - sadly - this fine ship was literally rusting away. I believe she was towed away from Portsmouth to the breakers at Cairnryan about a year later. Scanned from a 35mm transparency.

under thy wings, we will t(rust). Boiler room fire ended her. Was visiting my father that night and saw the blaze. She nearly got a reprieve in 1982 they towed her back into the dockyard to refit for the Falklands war. but her tendency to rust got the better of her. Served on the new one, amazingly several of her officers served on R08 😊
